Really, just read the stories. They're good! All right, I'll tell you what they were about. James Joyce was always writing these stories about poor Irish people who came to America before the 19th century. Eveline is a woman whose mother died. Her father sometimes beats Eveline's brothers, and she's scared he's going to beat her too. She doesn't want to stay with her family anymore. This guy Frank wants her to run away with him to Buenos Aires. She decides to do it. But just as they're going to the boat, Eveline hears this song. It reminds her of the song she heard the day her mother died. She remembers that the day her mother died, she promised she would take care of the family. Eveline can't leave. She tells Frank she's not going to Buenos Aires with him. She does it without any emotion too! And she goes right back to where she came from. In The Rocking-Horse Winner: Paul's mother is always on about how they're poor, they don't have any money, it really sucks, and it's because the father has bad luck. Paul decides that he has good luck. God told him so! Also, he hears voices. The voices come from inside the house and they keep telling him that they need more money! So Paul's on his rocking horse and he has a vision. He knows what horse is going to win in the horse race. So he tells his Uncle Oscar and Oscar places a bet and the horse wins! Paul doesn't want his mother to know where the money came from, it's his secret, so he has Oscar give her the money. But the mother's still not happy and the voices won't stop. They both keep demanding More Money! So Paul keeps getting on his rocking horse and having visions and winning more money. He really wants his mother to be happy! At the end, the mother starts worrying about Paul. But it's too late. She finds him on his rocking horse screaming out "Malabar!" She doesn't know what that means. Then he passes out and is taken to the hospital. The ending is really sad! Read it!
