What are the Best things to do in San Juan?
My Boyfriend and I will be vacationing in San Juan on Aug 31- Sept 3. We are a 21 & 23 year old Black couple. This will be our first trip to PR and we are trying to make the best of it, in the little time we have. We are interested in the PR culture, Night Life, beaches,shopping, Sight seeing, as well as activities. Money is no object, so if you have any advice or personal experience you would like to share, that would be very much appreciated.

First you should visit Old San Juan, their Forts "El Morro and San Cristobal", The Cathedral, the Governor House "La Fortaleza o Santa Catalina Castle", also could have something to eat on La Bombonera or Manolin. Go to Bacardi and take a tour. Shopping: Plaza las Americas, Beltz Outlets or Barceloneta Outlets. Could visit: Camuy Cavern, Arecibo Observatory. Visit Ponce the second most important city of PR, here you could see Serralles Castle, El Vigia (a beautiful cross on the top could see all ponce), Ponce firehouse (oldest on PR). Take a trip to El Yunque Rainforest and spent the day on Luquillo Beach. Night life around Isla Verde on different night clubs or go by night to old San Juan. Could also rent a car.

Just for you two alone there are things you can see and do to make your trip a wonderful experience. Lets start off with the basics. Transportation: Depending on where you go and what you want to see and do, you can walk, take the AMA(Metropolitan Authority Bus) or take a cab or rent a car. The AMA buses are like the buses in the States. Regular fare one way is 75 cents per person. Senior, disabled pay half fare or 35 cents and students with ID pay 60 cents. The cabs here are plenty but a bit expensive and sincerely I have heard a cab driver say to two couples in San Juan that he could take them around the city for $35 which is pretty steep, so in Old San Juan there are FREE trolley rides. One trolley takes you up to the center of San Juan and the other will take you up by the Forts and the North part. From there a nice walk down is good so you can see old historical buildings, take in the life of everyday San Juan and even shop and eat at your own pace. The trolleys run up until 9p.m. the last I was told by the drivers. I take the trolley just about every day when I go to San Juan. Now renting is depending on where you rent can be expensive or cheap. Hertz-too expensive Budget-not too bad USave-1-787-717-7368 they are located in Condado and to have nice rates. Lanes Car and Truck Rental-I always rent from Lanes. They pick you up, take you to their local and will give you the car there. They will also take you to the airport if needed even pick you up there. Now for what to see: In Old San Juan, there are the Forts San Cristobal and El Morro. They are very old and have gift shops. There is an entrance fee of $1.50 to $2.00 I put both prices because I heard that it may change. Senior citizens and disabled persons with proper ID get in free. The Morro has a video room like a mini theatre that does show a half hour movie on the History of El Morro. It is interesting English Version has Spanish Subtitles and the Spanish Version has English Sub titles. There is also the Old San Juan Bautista Cathedral that is open to all to go in and see. Straight down from the cathedral to the bottom is the Old Entrance and Gates from what was the Harbor where ships did dock hundreds of years ago. Also right there on the right hand side is a house that is 3 stories high. It is the house of Old San Juan's first Female Mayor she was Felisa Rincon De Gautier. All here keys to the different cities are on display as well has her clothes, her furniture is still in tact and her certificates every thing. Visiting is free to all. She was the one who brought the first vans of rea snow to Puerto Rico so that the poor children could see it. She also made the Hiram Bithorn Stadium back in the 60's and she started here the Head Start Programs. Nice place. There are also plazas to visit. Right from the Cathedral across the street on the right is the Convento Hotel. It was back in the 1700's a convent. Then many, many years later abandon and turned into a casino. Then now it is restored to a Luxury Hotel. Nice place to see antiques. There are many gift shops in Old San Juan. If where you are staying has no casino then the Sharaton Hotel in San Juan has a casino and no smoking is in all places. In Condado there are beaches also in Isla Verde. There are night clubs in San Juan there is the New Billiard Palace, Krash club 1-787-722-1131,The Parrot Club Old San Juan-1-787-725-7370 and Club Lazer 1-787-721-7581 which is continue on going party. Now Condado have hotels, beaches and so does Isla Verde. Isla Verde has many restaurants open until late at night. Now out of San Juan-Condado there are other towns and places to see such as: El Yunque Rain Forest - I have been here and it is breath taking this is in Carolina. Las Cavernas de Camuy- in the town of Camuy on rout 2 these are caves that are wonderful to see. Don't worry about special hicking gear. A trolley takes you down and there are special walk ways so you don't have to worry about spike shoes. Just wear comfortable clothing such as sneakers, jeans just regular comfortable clothing. There is the Rum Bacardi plant in Catano, you can leave Old San Juan on the Ferry which is 50 cents one way per person. Take a bus to the plant and see the rum being made. Or maybe your hotel has guided tours set to go there. Plaza Las Americas- the biggest shopping mall in the Caribbean-there is Macy's, JC Penny, Sears just to mention a few and some local stores and plenty of restaurants to eat from Agrentine Fuegos and Fuegitos to Chinnese. If you want you can take the train from Stop 26 and go to the town of Bayamon. It is very interesting. From the train station in Bayamon, there is the Canton Shopping mall and straight across is the new town library. In Bayamon there is the center of the town plaze with it's very old Church, also the Old Mayors Office is now a museum. Very interesting. There is a house of Dolls. A woman has all kinds of Dolls collected and entrance to the house and mayors museum is free. All in walking distance. I don't think there is much to said after what other people already did. For few days, I would recommend you to rent a car and try after San Juan and Isla Verde to go to the west side of the Island you can do it in one day or you may stay in Lajas, La Parguera and see the luminescent bay it is near some beautiful beaches. Well the San Juan area has several beaches including Condado Beach, Ocean Park, Isla Verde and El Escambrón. But if you are interested in a beach with true Caribbean blue waters, you should probably take a day trip to Culebra island or Vieques from Old San Juan; theres a ferry there that will take you there for like 60 bucks. Culture... Old San Juan has tons of historical stuff, fortresses, old Spanish manors, local landmarks, Museums, art galleries, etc. There's also the Bacardi place on the other side of the San Juan Bay. Shopping, again, Old San Juan if you want eclectic and kinda touristy stuff but if you want like a shopping center type setting, there's Plaza Las Americas, the Caribbeans biggest. Anchored by Macy's, JC Penney's, Sears and has everything from Coach, Armani and Zara to American Eagle Outfitters, Guess and Lucky Brand, including a movie theater and a bowling alley; or Plaza Carolina, Belz Outlet Mall. Night Life, theres every type of clubs, bars & pub. There's Shannan's Irish Pub in the suburb of Guaynabo (a local hotspot), Shots in Isla Verde, a couple of discos in Old San Juan plus all the bars in Calle San Sebastian. You could arrange a scuba tour, go the el Yunque( the only tropical rainforest in the US Park system), go to Ponce in the south, etc.

Also if you are just yearning to get back in touch witch people from there try finding a website where you can chat with people that are from your background. Hobbies and Friends. What I mean is that you're in a busy place, so why are you isolating yourself? It sounds like you're intimidated by the language barrier (between your Country and English language). You need to find some fun hobbies AND some new friends. It's always difficult starting out in a new place, where you don't know anyone. With your language barrier, you might feel that you can't make friends, because you won't understand them or they won't understand you. Why don't you post on Craigslist.com for your area for some female friends that speak your language......or go speak to your local parks a rec department head about TEACHING classes with your native language. You can also TAKE local clases with your park and rec department OR your local college campus. The thing is to get out and make friends, so you don't feel so isolated. And congratulations on your marriage. You found a rare treasure in love and I'm very happy for you. The rest will happen, just give it time...and get OUT of the house and find things that are fun for you.

1. ELVIS IS IN THE WITNESS PROTECTION PROGRAM Most people know about Elvis’ famous meeting with President Nixon. What they don’t know is that during this meeting Nixon issued Elvis Presley a DEA badge, a clue that Elvis was helping investigators with amajor case and later had to enter the federal witness protection program. It's ludicrous to believe that the DEA would have issued a badge to someone not working for them, even Elvis Presley. 2. ELVIS' NAME IS MISSPELLED ON HIS TOMB. Elvis’ father, Vernon, misspelled Elvis’ middle name on the grave—Aaron instead of Aron, as his mother named him. This is a sign that Vernon Presley knew that it was not his son in the tomb. 3. PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE CORPSE DON’T RESEMBLE ELVIS In 1977, the National Enquirer paid a third cousin of Elvis to smuggle a mini-camera in to the viewing of Elvis’ body. The resulting picture was published in the Enquirer, and caused shock waves among fans around the world. The eyebrows, chin, and fingers all looked unlike Elvis. 4. THE COFFIN WAS TOO HEAVY The coffin weighed 900 pounds: Elvis is known to have been overweight at the time of his death...but not that much. The only plausible account for that weight would be if the body was a wax dummy and there was an air conditioner inside the coffin to keep the wax dummy from melting. 5. COL. PARKER’S STRANGE QUOTE Col. Tom Parker, Elvis’ manager, said in a press conference shortly after Elvis’ death: ‘Elvis didn’t die.The body did. We’re keeping up the good spirits. We’re keeping Elvis alive. I talked to him this morning and he told me to 'carry on.’ Is it possible that there was a double entendre to those words: that they had literal truth to them that no one suspected at the time? 6. INCONSISTENCIES IN THE STORY The circumstances of death are described in conflicting ways. Witnesses disagree as to how the body was found and what Elvis was wearing, when the body was found, whether it was dead already, when death was declared, and whether AR was tried. 7. THE BOOK DID NOT EXIST THEN The book about the Shroud of Turin he is supposed to have been reading when he died was not published until a year later. 8. EVIDENCE THAT ELVIS WAS PLANNING ON THE END There seems to be evidence that Elvis was preparing for the end: —Why, for instance, did he order no new costumes for a new tour due to start on August 16th, 1977? —Why did he fire several old friends shortly before his death? —During his last tour he sang ‘Blue Christmas’ although it was summer: was he warning his fans? —Five months before hand, family members were suddenly cut out of his will. Did he realize he would need that money for his new life? 9. MYSTERIOUS FIGURE LEAVING MEMPHIS THE DAY AFTER On August 17th, 1977, one day after Elvis’ death, a ticket to Buenos Aires was bought at Memphis airport by a man looking like Elvis and using the name John Burrows, a code name Elvis frequently used when making hotel reservations for the Elvis entourage. 10. NEW ELVIS RECORDING EMERGES WITH SONGS FROM THE 90’S In 2002, an independent label released a CD entitled Kingtinued featuring Elvis’ voice singing at least fourteen well known songs which were not written and did not exist prior to August 16th, 1977. (See our current news item for more information!) Recently a new album called "KINGTINUED" was released by an independent label featuring a performer who sounds remarkably like Elvis. The credits on the CD list the singer as "The Voice of Elvis." Strange,right? Read on. In Las Vegas, KLAS-CBS News' special investigation unit performed computer voice print analysis that confirmed our suspicions: the voice is an exact matchfor the one and only Elvis Presley. Could the new CD be simply a collection of lost recordings never before released? This seems like a reasonable explanation. Except that many of the recordings on the CD are of recent well-known hits...tunes and lyrics not written until well after Elvis' alleged death in 1977! Here are just a few of the songs from the track list: Tears in Heaven, La Vida Loca, Sweet Home Alabama, Have I Told You Lately, Candle in the Wind (both the first version and the Princess Di version, England's Rose!). The producer of the record, Chrisopher Sheehan, has been totally unhelpful and less than forthright about the origins of these recordings. We are currently exploring what legal options exist that would force Mr. Sheehan to testify under oath. For their part, Elvis Presley Enterprises has tried to suppress this recording. Elvis was very vain, and he was embarrassed about his recent weight gain - an astonishing 50 pounds in the month before his so-called death. Even though he weighed about 250 pounds at the time of his "death," his death certificate lists him at a spry 170 pounds. The original death certificate disappeared, and the current death certificate is dated two months after his alleged death. The Wax Body Theory. This argument is very convincing when the facts are considered. Elvis's coffin required several pall bearers because it weighed 900 pounds. Attendants of the funeral reported that the air around the coffin was rather cool. It is suspected that the coffin contained an air conditioning unit to keep a wax body cool - a wax body that was a replica of the King designed to fool funeral-goers. And how did the Presley family get a 900 pound, custom made coffin ready for a funeral that was held on the day after his death? It takes a lot of time to build such an ela elaborate coffin. And why have the funeral so quickly? Some speculate that the immediacy was intended to make it as difficult as possible for the people who were Elvis's biggest fans (heads of fan clubs, etc.) to attend the proceedings. It could be a concern that they might recognize the flaws in the wax replica. Elvis was an 8th degree black belt whose hands were rough with calluses, yet the body in the coffin had hands that were soft and pudgy. The body in the coffin had a pug nose and arched eyebrows (unlike Elvis) and most importantly, one of the sideburns on the "corpse" was loose and falling off. A hairdresser later reported gluing the sideburn back on the body. Two hours after Elvis's death was announced publicly, a man who reportedly looked remarkably like Elvis purchased a ticket for Buenos Aeries, paid in cash, and used the name John Burrows: the same name Elvis had used as an alias several times before. Elvis had a few books that were considered to be his most prized possessions. He had a bible, several pharmaceutical books, books on death, and most importantly Chiro's Book of Numbers and The Autobiography of Yogi which I will explain more about later. After Elvis's death was announced, these books disappeared and were never recovered. In the weeks preceding his alleged death, Elvis's actions were not those of a man who was about to embark on an extensive US tour. He ordered no new suits despite having gained 50 pounds since his last tour, and he bid "adios" at his last show in Hawaii. He had never done this before. Adios, like the French adieu, has the significance of being a final good-bye as opposed to an "I'll be seeing you on my next tour" kind of good-bye. Others were intrigued by the King's decision to sign a lucrative TV deal with NBC that would cover the tour. It was unprecedented for a network to pay such a large amount up front, in cash, for such a deal. Many wonder why Elvis even agreed to the deal since his vanity discouraged him from making public appearances due to his obesity. RCA showed uncanny (and unbelievable) foresight by mass producing millions of Elvis's current and previous recordings and merchandise. This is standard practice for an act that is about to go on tour, but the numbers in this case were beyond reasonable expectations. The announcement of Elvis's death caused record sales to skyrocket. Elvis did other unusual things that created suspicion. First, he fired several employees that he had relied upon for a long time. Also, two days before his alleged death, Elvis telephoned a friend of his named Miss Foster. He told her that he wasn't planning on going on the upcoming tour. She asked him if he had canceled it, and he said that he had not. When she asked if he was ill, he said that he was fine, and that she should not ask any more questions or tell anyone anything, and that she should not believe anything she read. He told her that his troubles would all soon be over, and that he would call her in a few weeks. The author of Elvis Where Are Y You? writes that Miss Foster took a polygraph test regarding this story, and that she was not lying. The day after Elvis's alleged death, a woman named Lucy De Barbon, a former lover of Elvis, received a single rose in the mail. The card indicated that the flower was from "El Lancelot." This had been her pet name for Elvis, and it was a name that no one else knew. Flowers can't be sent from beyond the grave. This was Elvis's way of letting her know that he was not dead, even though he didn't want to be found. Chiro's Book of Numbers. Elvis had a fascination with numerology - an interest he fed by reading Chiro's Book of Numbers. The theory that the King orchestrated his death is further supported when considering the significance of the date of his alleged death. The date in question is August 16,1977. By adding the numbers in the date, 8, 16, and 1977, you get 2001. This is the title of Elvis' favorite movie in which the hero plans his immortality in the bathroom. Elvis spent a considerable amount of time doing the same: planning his afterlife on the john. Elvis spent so much time in the bathroom that he had his toilet converted into a reclining comfy chair. Coincidentally, the bathroom is also where Elvis's body was reportedly found. Given Elvis's religious affiliation (Christianity), he had a fascination with things that come in threes i.e. father, son, and holy ghost. The sum of the digits from his favorite film (2+0+0+1) is three. Let's consider the triad of the repetition of the triad of the repetition of the number 24. 2001 (favorite film) less 1977 (year of death) is 24. The two numbers from the day of death (8/16) when added up equal 24. The sum of the digits in the year of death (1+9+7+7) also equals 24. That is 3 occurrences of the number 24 which is divisible by 3, and when divided by three the result, 8 has a perfect cubed root (2x2x2=8). Elvis loved numerology, and when you consider the numeric significance of the date of his alleged death, it is clear that if indeed he did plan to fake his death, he could not have chosen a better date. Elvis had many reasons to fake his death. Elvis's life was in danger. He had recently lost $10,000,000 in an airplane/real estate deal with a California based organization called the "Fraternity" that had links to the Mafia. It is speculated that he corroborated with the government to expose the organized crime ring in exchange for protection - perhaps in the form of a new life and identity compliments of the witness relocation program. In addition, Elvis was a prisoner of his own fame. He had many other reasons to leave his life behind. Because of his incredible popularity, he was the recipient of several death threats, and he was concerned about the safety of his wife and daughter. Sometimes when he wanted to leave Graceland, he would send out look-alikes to distract would be followers. Elvis was also known to ride in the trunk of someone else's car to avoid detection. Once, when he fell ill in Las Vegas, he couldn't get proper medical attention because the hospital was overwhelmed by fans. At the time of his alleged death, Elvis was nearing the end of his career. He was 42, his hair was graying, he was grossly overweight, and his voice was starting to weaken. He was going down hill, and he was too proud to go out with a whimper. He would never want his fans to see him in such an unhealthy condition. Elvis had shown a fascination with death on several occasions. In the days leading up to his alleged death he was reported to have visited funeral homes at odd hours of the night with close friends. Was he doing research? Elvis once faked his death by setting up an elaborate shooting in which a would be killer fired blanks at Elvis who had a blood pack which he discharged. It was Elvis's intention to see how the people closest to him would react to his death. Perhaps what he learned convinced him to do it for real. Finally, one of Elvis' favorite books is the spiritual Autobiography of Yogi. One of the central themes of this book is the relinquishing of one's wealth and earthly possessions to achieve spiritual oneness. Elvis could do this, as well as address his other concerns of sanity and safety by faking his death and living in exile. Means. Elvis had the means to fake his own death. He is accused of destroying himself with drugs. In reality, Elvis was a pharmaceutical expert. He took a lot of drugs, but he knew what he was doing and was extremely careful. He knew what drugs he could self-administer to create a deathlike state. Further, Elvis's experience with the martial arts was such that he could slow his heart rate and breathing in order to feign death. What do you think about the third world?
I live in a third world country (Argentina) and I'm really ashamed of it. I want to know what thinks the people who had the luck of born in a normal country. Maybe you complain a little bit of your country, maybe because is having a bad moment. In my third world damm country not one single police man is honest, all are corrupt, there's not one single job well paid, the politicians are all corrupt but when I say all I mean ALL; they eat all the budget money, they don't do anything for the country and always makes falsies promises. To the worker man they discount 220$ of his salary for the homeless and the divorced mothers, the "homeless" get drunk with the money of the govt and rape or abuse or the kids. If in the USA are 20% of unemployment, here in Argentina there is like 60% of unemployment, almost all the country is poor, there only one country capital, is Buenos Aires (where I live) and is like a factory of murderers, drug addicts and thieves. Only the 20% of the province is the capital of the country, the rest is countryside. The economy is worst than crap, is awful, 1 dollar is 4 pesos. The criminality rate is like 80%, the people confused "democracy and liberty" with debauchery, they do whatever they want to and know one do anything about it. The criminals have a revolving door, they get in and out of the jail, just like that. The minors can rob a store and the police can't do anything about it because it doesn't exist any laws to punish them and no one want to do something about it. And a lot of stuff more and worst. Believe me when I say is not a good place to live, if you come here to live a couple of months you will return running to your country. If right now america is having a rough situation you better not complain, because once more you don't know what you have.

Human nature is the same the world over. In a country where more people have more, you merely have more people who despise the poor. It always seems better somewhere else. Here's a little story to illustrate my point: When the great Buddhist teacher Atisha was going to Tibet, he was told the people of Tibet were very good-natured, earthy, flexible, and open. He decided they wouldn't be irritating enough give him the opportunity to practice patience (a big Buddhist virtue), so he brought along with him a mean-tempered, ornery Bengali tea boy. The Tibetans like to tell the story that, when he got to Tibet, he realized that he need not have brought his tea boy.

I lived in El Salvador until I was 18. I was blessed to have a green card by then. I moved to America. I can't complaint. But I worry about my family in the third world because they're facing the similar problems to the ones in your country: vandalism from gangs, underpaid jobs and high cost of living, etc. Since I made friends there, and most importantly, I have family there, I'm not indifferent. I pray for them. I'm not in a position to help them financially... but what worries me is that they might just call one day to tell me they were victims of criminals and what not.

I wasn't aware things were that bad. Had friends from Buenos Aires when I was in high school many years ago, and they said it was poor and unstable, but didn't give any details. I guess things have gotten worse in 50 years. I keep telling people in the US that socialism is much preferable to the anarchy they want and call freedom, and deregulation. Here's a little story to illustrate my point: When the great Buddhist teacher Atisha was going to Tibet, he was told the people of Tibet were very good-natured, earthy, flexible, and open. He decided they wouldn't be irritating enough give him the opportunity to practice patience (a big Buddhist virtue), so he brought along with him a mean-tempered, ornery Bengali tea boy. The Tibetans like to tell the story that, when he got to Tibet, he realized that he need not have brought his tea boy.

I lived in El Salvador until I was 18. I was blessed to have a green card by then. I moved to America. I can't complaint. But I worry about my family in the third world because they're facing the similar problems to the ones in your country: vandalism from gangs, underpaid jobs and high cost of living, etc. Since I made friends there, and most importantly, I have family there, I'm not indifferent. I pray for them. I'm not in a position to help them financially... but what worries me is that they might just call one day to tell me they were victims of criminals and what not.

I wasn't aware things were that bad. Had friends from Buenos Aires when I was in high school many years ago, and they said it was poor and unstable, but didn't give any details. I guess things have gotten worse in 50 years. I keep telling people in the US that socialism is much preferable to the anarchy they want and call freedom, and deregulation.
